The Two-Edged Sword of AI's Recent Advances

Updated: Jun 11, 2024

In just the last few months, Artificial Intelligence has made some amazing new advancements. With the biggest players in the field having just released their latest and greatest AI tools and applications, the exponential leap in capabilities from just last year is astonishing!

Today’s AI can help you conduct lightning fast research, create amazing content, code new software and applications, and much, much more. The list is seemingly endless! It’s extremely exciting, but with such powerful and flexible capabilities, there are downsides to consider.

New Opportunies . . . and Dangers

The good news is that AI is acessible to virtually anyone. The bad news? Bad actors have the same access, and can put these game-changing technologies to nefarious use, making AI as dangerous as it is promising! And the risks will only increase in the days ahead.

One of the most likely new dangers we will see is an increase in the number of new bad actors entering the fray, creating a huge spike in the sheer number of threats and attacks. This is because AI tools drastically lower the barrier of entry for new users, handling much of the technical heavy lifting that used to require highly skilled coders and hackers. Now, even someone with extremely limited technical skills can generate cyber attacks, virtually at will. And, with global income disparity on the rise today, the number of potential cyber attacks may be expected to rise as well.

Rapidly Evolving Threats

On top of the increase in the number of threats, AI allows dangerous new capabilities for cyber attacks. The shape and approach of cyber attacks can now change, iterate, and evolve constantly with the help of AI. This will make it significantly more challenging for companies to stay up to date with the current threat landscape, creating a dramatic increase in vulnerability to a cyber crime. Already, there are examples of ethical hackers desiging AI-enhanced malware that morphs to circumvent industry-standard security measures that companies have in place today.

The AI advancement of the past few years is a double edged sword. It has powerful implications that are available to everyone, inculding those who will use it to do harm. Now more than ever, it is extremely cruicial that companies set in place as many security measures as possible to combat the ever changing landscape that is the cyber world.

Take Action & Stay Ahead!

CyberZek’s Global Insider Threat Manager (GITM) is a state of the art tool suite that helps manage insider threats by creating a dynamic map of all role-based access controls and using an AI behavior profiler to detect unusual and potentially dangerous behavior. This empowers your team to quickly detect and mitigate malicious acts from employees or contractors in a universal, standardized manner that does not lead to anyone being ‘singled out’ until they behave in a way that invites further scrutiny.
